Sri Sri Paramahansa Yogananda was one of the greatest kriya yoga masters. He led so many souls to God realisation through his lessons on kriya yoga. After so many years of his samadhi, people from all races are still benefitting from his teachings even today. Those who follow his simple but effective teachings and apply those in the day-to-day life sincerely are sure to attain success in God realisation. All that one requires is the sincerity in practise and time and dedication to follow his lessons.

HIS EARLY LIFE-

Sri Sri Paramahansa Yogananda on Jan 5, 1893 in Gorakhpur village which is located near Benares in Uttar Pradesh. His parents were followers of Sri Lahiri Mahasaya, who was the master of Sri Yukteshwar Giri, who was the master of Sri Sri Paramahansa Yogananda. In the presence of Sri Lahiri Mahasaya, they named the little child as Mukunda.

As a child, Mukunda liked solitary and quiet places. He would sit down in a secluded spot and meditate for long hours. On innumerable occassions he would go into a trance and experience the tranquility and peace within. Sometimes he would have visions on Lord Krishna, the Divine Mother and the Himalayan Yogis. For a long time he nurtured this wish of going to the Himalayas and meditating there. This never happened though. He was destined to bring about a revolution in mankind with his teachings on kriya yoga, a sacred spiritual science originating millenniums ago in India, which had been lost in the Dark Ages and revived in modern times by his lineage of enlightened masters.

Yogananda's life story,Autobiography of a Yogi, was published in 1946 and expanded by him in subsequent editions. A perennial best seller, the book has been in continuous publication since it first appeared and has been translated into 18 languages. It is widely regarded as a modern spiritual classic.

Yogananda founded Self-Realization Fellowship(SRF) to disseminate worldwide his teachings on India's ancient science and philosophy of Yoga and its time-honored tradition of meditation. The SRF in India is called Yogoda Satsanga Society of India.
