Purple heron is a wading bird which belongs to the heron family named Ardeidae. It is found in Africa, central and southern Europe, and southern and eastern Asia. The purple heron is a large bird. The European purple bird migrates in winters to tropical Africa, and Asian birds migrate further south within Asia.
The purple heron breeds in colonies near reed beds or trees close to large lakes or other extensive wetlands. It builds a bulky sticky nest. It feeds on fish, frogs, insects, spiders, small birds, rodents salamanders and snakes.
